Lavender Plants

Lavender plants are very plane in my opinion, by themselves, but have you ever seen an entire field of lavender?  It’s breathtaking.  It’s truly a site to behold and worth the trip if you have never witnessed this spectacular before.

Why is it that most gardeners try at one time or another to grow lavender plants?  After all, seasoned growers know that this type of plant loves dry, sunny, rocky places.  But we see it everywhere, including places that have wet, like England.

Lavender plants are very resilient and can withstand dry soil.   However don’t make the mistake of thinking that you can just plant it and walk away and let nature raise your plants.  You must care for it, just like you would any other plant or flower in your garden.

When you grow lavender plants, or any other plant for that matter, for the purpose of oil and fragrance, keep in mind that the dry ground will help you to produce higher quality oil with a more potent fragrance than a moist plant would.  Some people have the misconception that the cold temperature will kill a lavender plant, but this isn’t a fact at all.  Excessive moisture is the true killer.  If you have ground that freezes and thaws, this will create a very moist ground and possible create too much moisture for the roots.  If this is the case, then plant your lavenders next to a wall, rocks, bricks, etc so that heat from these structures can draw the moisture away from your plant.  This is the same case with humidity in the summers.
